We were born on Mount Etna

As happens to many children of this island, life has taken us far away. Travel, for those who leave, is a challenge. It is a way of searching for ourselves, crossing different places and people. But it is along the way that the desire to reclaim one’s roots, to return home, arises. The great theme of nòstos, which permeates and unites all the peoples of Magna Graecia. This is why we decided to find our origins again, in a difficult but at the same time generous land that for millennia has welcomed all peoples crossing the Mediterranean. We returned to the Volcano to reclaim the smells, tastes and sensations of our childhood and their dreamlike dimension.

FOUNDERS

Tenute dei Ciclopi was born from an ancient friendship that began among the classrooms of the University.

GIACOMO

«I love wine because it is conviviality and friendship: it unites and embraces»

I decided to live in Sicily, where I was born, although work often requires me to travel in Italy and abroad. I am professionally involved in training, especially younger generations, and have a strong passion for cooking. I define myself as a “slow chef.” I like to mix the age-old Sicilian culinary and gastronomic tradition together with the recipes and spices of the many peoples who have crossed the Mediterranean over the centuries. I love experimenting and building ideal bridges, food and wine routes that link Etna to the countries of North Africa and the Near East. I love wine because it is conviviality and friendship: it unites and embraces.

GIORDANO

«I believe that food and wine is the most authentic expression of our culture»

I was born in Catania, right at the foot of the Volcano. I am a lawyer, currently in charge of legal affairs for a well-known film production company. I divide my time, together with my wife and little Giovanni, among Catania, Rome and New York, although I retreat to Etna whenever I can. A sommelier by passion, I believe that food and wine is the most authentic expression of our country and culture. Tenute dei Ciclopi is a way for me to narrate the the profound bond that binds me to a land and a community.

RICCARDO

«Tenute dei Ciclopi was already part of my life before it was even founded»

I was born on Mountain etna and lives between Catania and Rome with Ludovica. I have a degree in law as well as in economics and business and a doctorate in European Union. I am president of a non-governmental organization associated with the Department of Global Communication of the United Nations that organizes worldwide paths of excellence based on the learning by doing method. I saw my first Nerello Mascalese vine when I was 3 years old, in my family’s country house in Nicolosi, on the southern slope of the volcano. In that house, my  father Enzo, a sculptor from Catania, would sculpt a Polyphemus a few years later, with his hair and beard intertwined with grapes: Tenute dei Ciclopi was already part of my life before it was even founded.

OUR WINEMAKER

Guided by Salvo Foti, the winemaker who refounded Etna viticulture, we produce Etna DOC wines exclusively from native grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds, Carricante and Catarratto for the whites.

We produce a wine that speaks of us and our land, rooted in the fiery bowels of the volcano, the grapes of which are caressed by the saltiness that comes from the sea. A wine that is both from the sea and the mountains, that narrates, through taste and smell the kaleidoscopic culture of our island to people near and far.

We are proudly part, along with 190 other producers, of the Consorzio Etna DOC

We have decided to recover, slowly, with the steady ancient gestures of those who love their land, some historic vineyards, which have escaped the various volcanic eruptions that over time, have swept away any sign of mankind.
We have chosen to care for old vines, some of which are even ungrafted, between Castiglione di Sicilia and Randazzo, at altitudes that have never been reached by phylloxera, recovering the Sicilian Sapling and using traditional chestnut poles from our forests.
